Duromine vs Ephedrine

Duromine is a sympathomimetic amine used for treatment of obesity. Ephedrine is also a sympathomimetic and is used in bronchial asthma and hypotension secondary to spinal anesthesia, but in combination with caffeine, it can be applied to reduce weight.

Both drugs are similar to amphetamine by their chemical structure and help to reduce weight suppressing the feeling of hunger.

  • Both sympathomimetics do not affect fat deposits without diet and physical activity.

Active ingredient of Duromine is Phentermine that acts on the hypothalamus – the brain region that controls appetite. Phentermine also actively affects the central nervous system and heart rate. Duromine is prescribed only for short-term obesity treatment and is not used longer than three months.

The combination of Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin is used for weight loss and is known under such trade names as Hydroxycut and Xenadrine. Furthermore, plant Ephedrine alkaloids are included in various biological products that are widely used to reduce weight.

For example, energy drug Mini Thin, which includes Ephedrine enjoys great popularity.

Ephedrine

Ephedrine in combination with Caffeine promotes weight loss affecting the heart rate. High frequency of heart rate leads to an increased heat exchange. This is a major factor in fat burning.

The main advantage of Ephedrine is that it has no effect on proteins, herewith breaking down fat tissues. This helps to maintain muscle mass when losing weight. Due to this ability, Ephedrine is often used in professional bodybuilding.

  • All Phentermine-containing drugs for treating obesity (including Duromine) contain this active ingredient only in the form of hydrochloride.
  • Ephedrine can be used for getting rid of excess weight in two chemical compounds – hydrochloride and sulfate.
  1. They both act identically while reducing weight, but Ephedrine HCL has greater percentage content of Ephedrine than Ephedrine sulfate (82% vs. 77%).
  2. This means that therapeutic effect of Ephedrine HCL for weight loss is greater than Ephedrine sulfate.
  3. Side effects of Duromine most often arise from cardiovascular system: precordial pain, high blood pressure, palpitations or tachyarrhythmia. In addition, Phentermine may cause insomnia, tremor, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness or headache.
  4. Side effects of Ephedrine are mild and occur only in long-term use of the sympathomimetic (more than 6 months) or in overdose.
  5. Most often, use of Ephedrine may cause palpitations, tachycardia, insomnia, tremor and headache.
  6. However, these side effects are reversible and do not cause much discomfort.

Duromine (active ingredient Phentermine) is one of the most popular means in obesity treatment. Ephedrine is used less and less for weight loss and is included only in a few drugs for treatment of asthma or anesthesia. In 2004, the FDA banned Ephedrine use because of the frequent cases of side effects, and it was replaced by less toxic agent – pseudoephedrine.
